Meta Tags

Hidden HTML tags that tell search engines what your page is about. Includes title tags (shown in Google results) and meta descriptions.

What are Meta Tags?

Meta tags are snippets of HTML code in your page's header that provide information about the page to search engines and browsers. They're not visible on the page itself, but they significantly influence how your page appears in search results.

The Most Important Meta Tags

Title Tag — the clickable headline shown in Google search results. Should be 50–60 characters, include your primary keyword, and be unique per page.

Meta Description — the preview text below the title in search results. Should be 120–160 characters, compelling, and include a call-to-action. Doesn't directly affect rankings but significantly impacts CTR.

Meta Robots — tells search engines whether to index a page or follow its links. Admin and dashboard pages should have noindex, nofollow.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the same title and description on every page (Google penalises duplicate meta)
  • Titles that are too long — they get cut off in search results
  • Missing meta descriptions — Google generates its own, often poorly
  • Not including target keywords in the title tag
